Got a shutoff notice? What to do in the next 48 hours
- Don't ignore it. A shutoff (disconnection) notice gives a date. You usually have a few days or more to act.
- Call your utility today. Ask for a payment plan (also called a deferred payment agreement). Ask what protections apply to you.
- Tell them about medical needs. Most states delay a shutoff if a doctor certifies a medical emergency. Ask for the medical certificate form.
- Apply for energy assistance. LIHEAP and crisis funds can pay part of the bill. Applying often triggers extra protection.
- Check winter rules. Many states limit shutoffs in winter. See your state page.
- Still stuck? File a complaint with your state utility commission. It's free.
